Twenty Third Sunday in Ordinary Time (Year C)

This is a very difficult set of readings. The Gospel itself starts with a saying which many find hard to understand: must we really “hate” our family to be the Lord’s disciple? The point is that it is relative: what are we prepared to give up for the Gospel? Are we going to try and make our own cross, or accept whatever we are given? Jesus is probably trying to discourage the crowd of sensation seekers and hangers-on who are crowing round him. He wants real disciples, who are aware of the possible cost: not like the incompetent builder, or the useless king. To be a disciple, one must be prepared to follow Jesus anywhere, whatever it might cost in possessions, family or friends. We may never understand why, but then “Who can know the intentions of God?”

Notes for Readers

First Reading: Wisdom 9:13-18
Let the first two questions hang in the air - they are very much the key to this reading. It is all about how hard it is for us, mortals, to have any idea about what God is up to. The reading uses lots of images to try and get this basic idea across - the images are poetic - so the reader should look for the “key-words”: for example: in line 6 is the wonderful phrase “tent of clay” - think about it! It’s a great way of describing how we sometimes feel, when our minds wants to go soaring off somewhere, but our bunions or bad back bring us down to earth with a bump. Remember that the passage beginning “As for your intention...” is directly addressed to God. Pause before it, so that people have a chance to keep up with you. Be very careful with the last sentence, which is a mess: try this one out loud, so that it doesn’t just come over as gibberish, but people realise that God is being thanked for his teaching and for salvation, both of which come through Wisdom.
Second Reading: Philemon 9-10, 12-17
It’s worth getting your Bible out and reading the whole letter, to get the context. Paul here writes a very personal, quick note to Philemon (a Christian), as he sends back Onesimus, a slave who has run away. Onesimus has become a Christian in the meantime, and so Paul asks his owner to welcome him, not as a slave, but as a brother. Bring out both the touching, personal side of Paul we glimpse in the reading, and also the way he uses this simple letter and event as an opportunity to teach very practically what Christian love is all about.

Following Christ in consecrated life
CCC 914-919, 930-932: "The state of life which is constituted by the profession of the evangelical counsels, while not entering into the hierarchical structure of the Church, belongs undeniably to her life and holiness." Christ proposes the evangelical counsels, in their great variety, to every disciple. The perfection of charity, to which all the faithful are called, entails for those who freely follow the call to consecrated life the obligation of practicing chastity in celibacy for the sake of the Kingdom, poverty and obedience. It is the profession of these counsels, within a permanent state of life recognized by the Church, that characterizes the life consecrated to God. The state of consecrated life is thus one way of experiencing a "more intimate" consecration, rooted in Baptism and dedicated totally to God. In the consecrated life, Christ's faithful, moved by the Holy Spirit, propose to follow Christ more nearly, to give themselves to God who is loved above all and, pursuing the perfection of charity in the service of the Kingdom, to signify and proclaim in the Church the glory of the world to come."
